In a world where not a lot makes sense (especially when it comes to spending hundreds of dollars) food insurance is a breath of fresh air. You spend mad money on car insurance, home insurance, renters insurance, cell phone insurance, apple protection plan, etc etc etc. But what if a hurricane hits your city? None of that will help you get through the night/week/month. Food will.
When it comes down to it, you can’t eat cash. If you were in New Orleans during Katrina and you had $20 cash you still couldn’t run to the nearest McDonalds and grab a burger. Your cash was useless.
Anyway, you get the jist of it. Now for the details….

so why don’t you have food insurance?
If you think about it, food and water are vital to our survival. A human being can only live for a few weeks without food and only a few days without water. So why aren’t we more concerned with protecting our most basic necessities? In light of the tragic events in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, the power outage in New York City that brought the city to a standstill, and the constant threat of fires, earthquakes, tornadoes and other natural disasters across the country, it is important to make sure we always have the basic necessities of life with enough home food storage for your family to survive for at least two weeks.
Foodinsurance.com has designed an emergency pack and emergency kits to give people at least two weeks of great food and clean water until more permanent solutions can be obtained. Many of the meals are freeze-dried, which means they will last up to 10 years and retain their nutritional value. Also, unlike other survival food solutions that require you to grind wheat or employ some other 18th century skill, Food Insurance meals come prepackaged as lasagna, beef stroganoff, and a host of other great entrees. And to top it off, this food comes packaged in a high quality backpack so you can grab it and go.
Insurance is a great idea because it protects us and gives us peace of mind. Why not make sure you and your loved ones are prepared with enough food and water to survive the ever-increasing number of disasters in the world?
Food Insurance Home Food Storage. It makes sense. Stop worrying. Get protected.

sooo…another ‘whim’(lack of a better word) to invest into that will require the ‘meaningless’ cash that will get us nowhere in the case of emergency…honestly my confusion may appear cynical, but it’s not making sense to me. Am i missing something here? Regardless of the degree of the state of emergency, will have food/water for only 2 weeks…hmmm…something is not right here! What happens after 2 weeks? I am not really an expert, but to overcome a natural disaster it usually takes more then just 2 weeks. Mark me if i am wrong, but it usually takes 2 weeks or even more to absorb what has happened and come out of the state of shock. After those 2 weeks, is it back to accepting aid/charity from UN/Red Cross/etc…how is the investment gonna help if it’s only for 2 weeks? Food insurance not really making sense at the moment!
personally i have to disagree with daily tonic — i think this is a damn good idea — the human body can survive about 2 weeks without food and only a few days without water. in the case of a natural disaster or some catastrophic terrorist attack, you are much better of having your own food and water than not — right???
if you look back at how long it took food and water to reach katrina, haiti, pakistan — you can quickly see how this can help. plus, what the fuck will your cash do for you when you dont have a house or food — what will your health insurance do for you then? — what will your car insurance do for you then? — what will applecare do for you then? — nothing!
this insurance will most likely save your life, those wont.
Logan:
You are right and I agree with you on the fact that there is nothing better then being secure and having your own supply of food and water (which is even true for everyday survival) BUT my question still remains…at what cost?
You provided examples to emphasize your point on the necessity of delivering food and water as fast as possible in case of emergency/natural disasters, but do you believe those people in such countries have the economics/financial means to be insured for such? Especially, since these people and everyone else are having to dig deep into their pockets as it is to be insured for health, car, house, life…etc., which leaves them with a huge hole that has to be mended for the next payment due the next month. And what about the people who can’t even afford insurance at all? Do we exclude the people during a case of emergency b/c they weren’t insured just like we do with them right now concerning other insurances? Famine exists even more in the case of war/natural disasters. People in such poverty stricken places will do anything chaotic for survival rationalized by their basic instinct.
Don’t get me wrong, the idea is great…but the loopholes within is what concerns me and at the same time confuses me. As pleasing as it may appear on the paper/screen/tv ‘emergency backpack…your own food/water guaranteed in the case of natural disasters is yours for only $199 a month’ the fine print will always trap you…so where is the fine print? and what does it entitle? what is the guaranty…are you denied your backpack b/c you can’t prove your identity or that your children can’t prove their your kids? This maybe far fetched BUT this is the same game that is played with other insurances that as you point out will do ‘nothing’ at that time BUT you know they aren’t doing anything but making people pay right now or lose it all…just like what will happen when people can’t pay their premium for this?
As bad as this my sound…i am suspicious of this food insurance as a money making ploy (just because recently there has been natural disasters). We all agree that no one can predict when/where a disaster may occur BUT their something we do know and that is that we are partly at fault. One word: Global Warming!!! It exists and we are the cause of it. Yet we are also the ones that can do something about it. So are we that much obsessed with insuring ourselves from our own actions, instead of insuring our land the way we should?
@DailyTonic: Are you suggesting they are wanting $199/month for actual “insurance”? You do realize that you are buying, to be shipped to you via UPS immediately after payment, so YOU store it in your basement for up to 25 years. Also, two weeks is a long time when you’re trying to move off from a disaster. I think two weeks is more than enough time to get yourself away from a disaster and probably off to a friend of family’s house far from the disaster. Moreover, this is “eating twice daily”. I reckon if the disaster is THAT big, you could even ration this longer, possibly finding additional food elsewhere while preserving your freeze dried food. Break it down like this: $200 for two weeks food that lasts 25 years, that means $0.84/month for 25-years. That’s some darn cheap insurance.

Storing food and water against emergencies is a sensible thing to do.
What is NOT sensible is to buy over-priced products promising a “25-year shelf life” from a company in business for only a few years.
MUCH BETTER idea:
Routinely buy extra CANNED foods of your choice and write the purchase date on top of each can, along with the expiration date if you have it.
Canned food has a major advantage over freeze-dried foods: you don’t need to use your possibly limited potable water supply to prepare it.
Canned food will last several years, but not forever, so you should rotate your older stored canned food into your daily diet while replenishing your supply.
The same goes for water: you can store water in glass containers [avoid plastics as they degrade over time] in a dark closet or cellar – and you should change it monthly. Investing in a water filtration system is a good idea as well.
If you are concerned with a “grab what you can and run” scenario, you can easily assemble such a backpack yourself using the same methods and frequent replenishment with fresher products for a much better price.
wow great info Don!
